 In Sermon Notes

The scripture states that Hell is a real place of existence.  Hell is the place for eternal exile, where the ungodly experience God’s just retribution against sin.

Man has attempted to reduce Hell to non existent by conceiving false theories regarding Hell.

  • Annihilation: The theory that when we die physically we cease to exist all together – LIE
  • Purgatory: The theory that hell is temporal and a place where the unholy go to be purified and once purified, go to heaven – LIE
  • Universalists: Because God is love everyone will go to heaven and no one will go to hell – LIE

WHY DOES HELL EXIST? Because God is Holy and Just.

Matthew 25:41 (NASB)

“Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; (the devil and his angels CHOSE to abide outside of the presence of God and so unfortunately it will be with many people)

Matthew 25:46 (NASB)

These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Revelation 20:10-15 (NASB)

And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

We know that hell is real because physical death is real.  Death is the temporal reality of the presence of sin.  Hell is the eternal reality of the presence of sin (and is called the Second Death)

Listen to Jesus’ as he expresses how badly we should want to stay out of Hell:

Matthew 18:8-9 (NASB)

“If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire. If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell.

What is Hell?  Hell is a wasteland outside of God’s goodness where there is NO EXIT and NO CHANGE.

Genesis 1:2 (NASB)

The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

Luke 16:19-26 (NASB)

“Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame (fire is the element God refers to as how he purifies through His judgement.  Why is it eternal fire because it will take all eternity to purify the sinner and their sin.  The only element that can purify the sinner is The Blood of Jesus).’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’

In hell the full expression of sin in the sinners life will be expressed.

Mark 9:43-44 (NASB)

If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, [where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.]

The only fire explains the external punishment.

The worm explains the internal punishment.

  • Regret that there was a chance to be saved and it was not taken
  • A Personal Worm: The state of the sinner in which they die is what will be their torment for eternity. The sin nature of the person in that particular area will be set free without the where with all for it to be satisfied.
  • No Peace
  • No Joy
  • No Time – 1 second and 1 Trillion years are the same because it’s eternity.
  • No Death – Nothing ever changes

2 Peter 3:9 (NASB)

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
