A Study of the Holy Spirit – WEEK THREE
Today is the the day the Lord has made – I will rejoice and be glad in it – My heart and my mind are ready to receive – the good news of Jesus Christ – Because I believe in Jesus finished work on the cross – I am the righteousness of God – and all the promises of the Word of God – belong to me.
I. FIRST MAN – DEATH —> SEPARATION FROM GOD
John 16:7-9 (Amplified)
7 However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you].
8 And when He comes, He will convict and convince the world and bring demonstration to it about sin and about righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God) and about judgment:
9 About sin, because they do not believe in Me [trust in, rely on, and adhere to Me];
* The work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the sinner is to convict (a formal declaration that someone is guilty of a criminal offense) and convince the world of their sin of not believing in Jesus and His Finished Work on the Cross.
II. 2ND MAN – SAVED BY THE SPIRIT, SANCTIFIED (sucker example / set apart for God’s use) BY SELF
We attempt to live this Christian life in our own strength without the HELP of the Holy Spirit
Galatians 5:16-18 (Amplified)
But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God).
For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do.
But if you are guided (led) by the [Holy] Spirit, you are not subject to the Law.
* The work of the Holy Spirit is to continue to oppose our selfish nature.
Romans 7:18-20 (Amplified)
17 For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh (ME – our human/carnal nature is selfish and self-centered). I can will what is right, but I cannot perform it. [I have the intention and urge to do what is right, but no power to carry it out.]
18 For I fail to practice the good deeds I desire to do, but the evil deeds that I do not desire to do are what I am [ever] doing.
19 Now if I do what I do not desire to do, it is no longer I doing it [it is not myself that acts], but the sin [principle] which dwells within me [fixed and operating in my soul]
III. 3RD MAN – Keeps the CROSS as his FOCUS.
O unhappy and pitiable and wretched man that I am! Who will release and deliver me from [the shackles of] this body of death?
O thank God! [He will!] through Jesus Christ (the Anointed One) our Lord! So then indeed I, of myself with the mind and heart, serve the Law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
THEREFORE, [there is] now no condemnation (no adjudging guilty of wrong) for those who are in Christ Jesus, who live [and] walk not after the dictates of the flesh, but after the dictates of the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has freed me from the law of sin and of death.
For God has done what the Law could not do, [its power] being weakened by the flesh [the entire nature of man without the Holy Spirit]. Sending His own Son in the guise of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, [God] condemned sin in the flesh [subdued, overcame, deprived it of its power over all who accept that sacrifice],
So that the righteous and just requirement of the Law might be fully met in us who live and move not in the ways of the flesh but in the ways of the Spirit [our lives governed not by the standards and according to the dictates of the flesh, but controlled by the Holy Spirit].
For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholy desires set their minds on and pursue those things which gratify the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit and are controlled by the desires of the Spirit set their minds on and seek those things which gratify the [Holy] Spirit.
Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever].
All of this means that our faith is to be placed exclusively in Christ and what He did for us at the Cross, which then gives the Holy Spirit the latitude to work mightily within our lives.
